Be Still, He Is Still God
Psalm 46, emphasis on verse 10
Our bodies may lie down at night, but our minds rarely do. We’ve built lives — and even faith — around striving, and somewhere along the way we forgot what it means to simply be still. Psalm 46 doesn’t call us to inactivity. It calls us to a settled confidence in who God is. The Hebrew word rapha — translated “be still” — means to let go, to release the grip, to quit striving. When I stop striving, I start trusting. And when I start trusting, I discover that God was always in control.
Be still. He is still God.
1. Rest In His Presence
- Psalm 46:1 — God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
- God doesn’t promise the absence of trouble. He promises His presence in it.
- The safest place you can be isn’t a life free of trouble — it’s a life anchored in His presence.
- Stillness starts with proximity. Don’t neglect time in His Word, time in His presence.
- You can’t rest in a presence you never show up for.
2. Trust His Promises
- Psalm 46:2–9 — even if the earth gives way, even if the mountains fall into the sea, we will not fear.
- God doesn’t promise that we won’t fail. He promises that He won’t.
- Our circumstances do not determine God’s faithfulness — His character does.
- Trust isn’t believing life will always make sense. It’s believing God is still good when it doesn’t.
- When you know who God is, being still stops feeling like a risk.
3. Respond With Worship
- Psalm 46:10–11 — Be still, and know that I am God… The Lord Almighty is with us.
- Stillness isn’t inactivity. It’s confidence in the Lord.
- Worship is what stillness looks like in motion — a quiet heart choosing to trust out loud.
- When our hearts are quiet before Him, evil and darkness lose their power over us.
- The enemy thrives in our striving. He loses ground in our stillness.
Bottom Line: You weren’t made to carry what only God can hold. Stop striving long enough to remember He never stopped being in control. Be still — not because nothing is happening, but because you know exactly who is holding it all together. He is still God.
