Living Legacy “Show Them Jesus!” — Psalm 78:1–7
Most people who follow Jesus didn’t come to Him as adults. Research suggests roughly 83% of Christians came to faith between the ages of 4 and 14. That statistic should stop us in our tracks, because it means the most spiritually formative years of a person’s life are happening right now — under our roofs, in our pews, in our carpools. And here’s the harder truth: children are shaped far more by what they observe than by what they’re told. A parent’s example doesn’t fade when the kids grow up. It follows them for a lifetime.
Psalm 78 gives us the assignment in plain language: tell the next generation what God has done. Not just talk about Him. Show them Jesus.
1. Model a Faith They Can See
- 1 Corinthians 11:1 — Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
- Paul could say “imitate me” because his life actually pointed somewhere. Can we?
- Kids don’t need a perfect parent. They need an authentic one — someone they watch pray, repent, forgive, and trust God when it’s hard.
- Your children will learn more about God from watching you live than from anything you ever tell them.
2. Build a Home Around God’s Presence
- Deuteronomy 6:6–7 — talk about God’s commands at home, on the road, when you lie down, when you get up.
- Faith isn’t a Sunday activity. It’s a household culture.
- The goal isn’t a family devotion checkbox. It’s a home where God is naturally part of the conversation.
- What we make normal in our homes is what our children will consider normal in theirs.
3. Lead Them By the Holy Spirit
- Joel 2:28–29 — I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
- The promise of the Spirit isn’t reserved for adults. God moves on sons and daughters, young and old.
- Don’t just teach your children about God. Teach them to hear from Him.
- We can raise a generation that knows the Spirit personally, not just theologically.
4. Serve So They Learn to Serve
- Children learn generosity, humility, and compassion by watching it lived out, not by hearing it explained.
- When they see you serve the church, help a neighbor, or give without recognition, you’re handing them a template.
- A serving parent raises a serving child.
5. Leave a Legacy That Lasts
- Psalm 78 — We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord.
- Notice it’s not “we might” or “we hope to.” It’s we will.
- The legacy that matters most isn’t financial, professional, or reputational. It’s spiritual.
- What you pass down in faith outlives everything else you leave behind.
Bottom Line: Your kids are watching. Your grandkids are watching. The next generation is forming their picture of God largely from the people closest to them. You don’t have to be a theologian or a perfect parent — you just have to live a faith they can see. Show them Jesus.
