Representing Jesus!

James 3:9–12 | Colossians 3:17 | Matthew 5:16

 

The moment we confess Jesus as Lord, we don’t just receive salvation — we receive a role. We become ambassadors. And like any ambassador, we carry the reputation of the one we represent. People around us — our coworkers, neighbors, family members, and social media followers — are forming opinions about Jesus and the church based on what they see in those who say they follow Him. The question isn’t just do you believe in Jesus? The question is: do they see Jesus in you?

We should stand out — not because we’re loud, but because we’re different. Not because we have a title, but because we reflect Him.

 

1. We Must Control Our Words

• James 3:9–12 — the same mouth that praises God cannot also pour out poison. A spring doesn’t produce both fresh and bitter water.
• We think it’s wrong to curse, but then we turn around and talk about people.
• We quote Scripture on Sunday and gossip on Monday. We worship with our mouths and wound with them in the same breath.
• Our words don’t just reveal what’s on our lips — they reveal what’s happening in our hearts.
• The question isn’t just what we say. It’s whether the words we use honor the God we claim to serve.

 

2. We Must Control Our Attitudes

• Colossians 3:17 — whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.
• Attitudes preach much louder than any sermon. You can say the right thing the completely wrong way.
• When the world reacts with anger, bitterness, and entitlement — and we respond the same way — we’ve lost our witness in that moment.
• Our attitude should be marked by gratitude for God’s grace, not grievance about our circumstances.
• A bad attitude can undermine years of faithful testimony. People remember how we made them feel more than what we said.
• Does my attitude reflect the character of Jesus — or just my mood?

 

3. We Must Control Our Actions

• Matthew 5:16 — let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
• The things we do will either confirm or contradict everything we say.
• What happens in private with God has to match what people see from us in public. When it doesn’t, people notice — and they lose trust, not just in us, but in Jesus.
• We speak for Him. Every choice, every reaction, every interaction is a statement about the Jesus we claim to follow.
• People aren’t just watching — they’re drawing conclusions.

 

Bottom Line: Being a Christian is more than a confession — it’s a representation. Your words, your attitude, and your actions are either pointing people toward Jesus or steering them away. You are someone’s closest picture of what following Jesus looks like. Make sure what they see reflects Him.
