Primary Scripture: John 13:34–35

Jesus said the watching world would know we are His disciples by our love, not our opinions, talents, or church attendance.
The problem? The world is starving to encounter real love—and they often don’t see it in God’s people.

God’s love is different:

• It says, “I love you even when you fail Me.”

• It is sacrificial, not selfish.

• It is greater than human failure—ours and others’.

A big barrier to this love is spiritual pride—pride dressed up in church clothes.
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Spiritual pride:

• Doesn’t receive correction

• Looks down on others

• Struggles to admit wrong

• Plays the comparison game

Against that backdrop, we see three facts about God’s love:

1. God’s Love Moves First

Scripture: 1 John 4:19; Romans 5:8

• “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)

• “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

• God didn’t wait for us to clean up, measure up, or show up.
  He loved first. He moved first. He pursued first.

• We don’t earn His love—He freely gives it.

2. God’s Love Gives Sacrificially

Scripture: John 3:16; Ephesians 5:2; 1 John 3:16

• “For God so loved the world that He gave…” (John 3:16)

• Jesus “loved us and gave Himself up for us.” (Ephesians 5:2)

• “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us…” (1 John 3:16)

Real, biblical love costs something:

• Time

• Comfort

• Pride

• Convenience

If my love never costs me anything, it might not be biblical love—just preference.

3. God’s Love Changes Us

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:14; Romans 2:4; 1 John 3:1

• “Christ’s love compels us…” (2 Corinthians 5:14)

• God’s kindness (His love) leads us to repentance, not complacency (Romans 2:4).

• “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1)

God loves us right where we are,
but He loves us too much to leave us there.

His love:

• Softens hard hearts

• Breaks pride

• Reshapes how we see ourselves and others

• Moves us toward humility, repentance, and transformation

Bottom line:
God’s love moves first, gives sacrificially, and changes us deeply.
If that love is truly at work in us, then:

• We won’t walk in spiritual pride.

• We will love when people fail us.

• We will become the kind of people whose lives prove that Jesus’ love is real.
